Release Notes: ART 1.5.3109, 04/19/2010

Major changes:

  • Rogue Server detection more robust.  You can now tell ART which networks to scan, when it looks for servers TSM doesn't know anything about.
  • Backup Aging Tab removed. Use the new Storage tab to find the same information, better.
  • Sweep results sent by email.  ART admins now get an email summary of the sweep results.

Minor changes:

  • Server session logs show more relevant lines. Sometimes ART would only show the session that did the proxy setup, not the session that did the restore.
  • License is invalid: some people would get this message when they cut and pasted in their license, due to Windows/Unix line endings. Fixed now.
  • Special characters in Unicode filenames: ART sweeps would halt on certain characters.  Fixed now.
  • name_encoded: No method found. This was due to a problem in our database upgrade.  Fixed now, but  if you got this message, either download a new zip file and reinstall on ESX, or email us for a manual fix.
  • Locked nodes report as "untestable".  Formerly they reported as "failed".

Release Notes: ART 1.5.3062, 02/22/2010

Major changes:

  • Storage reports find wasted space.  Use the new Storage tab to find  junk backups and runaway storage, and reclaim wasted storage space quickly.  Also find filesystems that are nearly full, where applications may crash soon. All reports are customizable, and you can add more.

Minor changes:

  • Excluded filespaces were still tested in some cases: fixed now
  • "Trusted Computing Agent has wrong permissions": fixed now

Release Notes: ART 1.4.2953, 11/23/2009

Major changes:

  • none

Minor changes:

  • Excluded domains were still tested in some cases: fixed now
  • Number-of-files-to-test preference was being ignored: fixed now.  Most people only test one file, and that's sufficient unless your auditors demand more.
  • TSM 6.1 client used now: some customers with 6.1 clients would have sweeps halt due to dsmc reporting "Invalid Object" errors to dsmerror.log.  The 6.1 client resolves this.
  • Incorrect "No filespaces" error: users who moved a node from one domain to another sometimes got duplicate nodes in ART's database.  Fixed now, and the upgrade process resolves the duplicates.
  • Deleted filespaces reappeared: users who deleted a filespace would see ART report it on a subsequent sweep.  Fixed now.

Release Notes: ART 1.4.2946, 09/22/2009

Major changes:

  • Upgrades now use standard Linux methods: we now use debian packaging instead of subversion to upgrade customer sites.  This resolves some firewall problems.
  • Normal (not administrative) users can drill down to sweep results: formerly these users - often LDAP-authenticated - were limited to the top-level dashboard.

Minor changes:

  • broken link on Backup Aging page: fixed now
  • dashboard pagination improved: deleted sweeps weren't counted in the sweeps-per-page
  • "upgrade test failed" when updating preferences: our new upgrade method no longer needs this test, so we removed the warning.
  • sweeps-per-page preference works now: the old preference was being cached; you would change it and see no effect. works now.
  • "No filespaces found" when there are filespaces: moving a node to a new domain sometimes caused this.  Fixed now, and upgrading fixes the problem nodes.

Release Notes: ART 1.4.2913, 07/16/2009

Major changes:

  • Faster sweeps: ART is smarter about finding a random file to test, so even fileservers with millions of files work with the default timeouts.
  • TSM Server status bar: Each TSM server now has an icon in the upper left that turns red if communication fails (which might mean it's down).

Minor changes:

  • Handle client-side encryption better: Encrypted clients prompt for a key when you try to restre a file.  ART now ignores that prompt and assumes success.  Tell us if you think ART should hold all the encryption keys and physically test them.
  • Remove extraneous messages in logs: sometimes the activity log would include messages unrelated to the restore test.
  • Large-file fix: When selecting a random file, ART would incorrectly parse files larger than 10GB, resulting in "Excessive command line arguments" in the logs.
  • Ignored nodes showed as untestable. Ignored nodes sometimes showed up as untestable rather than ignored.
  • Minor help text improvements.

Release Notes: ART 1.4.2879, 05/04/2009

Major changes:

  • Network-proxy setup: Some customers could not upgrade or send us their logs because of network settings.  The Preferences page now lets you configure these settings.

Minor changes:

  • Scheduled sweep fails: We documented that the crontab or command-line entry needs the full path on www.tsmworks.com/art-faq.
  • Easier to ignore filespaces: If you use a naming convention for decommissioned nodes/filespaces, you can sort them together (ie, by name) and check "ignore" per-filespace.  See the Backup Aging page.
  • ESX installs are faster: Used sparse-file compression on the Virtual Disk files.
  • Confirmation on sending logs: ART shows you what's happening when you click "Send ART logs."
  • License request: Formerly, the enter-your-license screen only appeared when starting a new sweep; now it appears earlier.
  • Cosmetic changes: Wrapping of long filenames works better; some IE6 idiosyncrasies work better.

Release Notes: ART 1.3.2564, 02/09/2009

Major changes:

  • Active Directory (LDAP) authentication: Set the AD server name in preferences, and ART will check logins against your corporate Active Directory server.

Minor changes:

  • Ignored nodes would disappear: If you checked the "Ignore" box, the node would not appear on the next sweep - not what we intended.  Now the ignored nodes still appear, but under the "ignored" section.
  • Added test-email button: Enter an email address and check the test box; then "save preferences" will send out a test email.
  • SMTP password: Would show in plain text.  Now it's a password field, and shows only dots.

Release Notes: ART 1.2.2316, 01/21/2009

(Note: upgrading to this release may take 10 minutes or so. Thanks for your patience.)

Major changes:

  • Test old backups too: If a filespace has not been backed up in months, ART calls it "Failed" and does no more testing.  But some of our customers have schedules that use the "object=" option.  This, sadly, defeats TSM's setting of the last-backed-up date. Now they can set the "Maximum Backup Age" to 0, and ART will test these old filespaces too.
  • Don't test disk pools: Some customers keep 1-2 days of backups on disk, migrating to tape after that.  ART would be testing the disk, not the tapes.  Now you can tell ART to only test files that are N days old, which normally come from the tape volumes rather than the disk.
  • Solaris support: Sun Solaris nodes used to say "unsupported"; they work now.
  • Deleted nodes: When you would "remove node" from TSM, it would still appear on the next sweep.  Now it won't.

Minor changes:

  • dsm.sys options: You can now put any option you want to the canned dsm.sys ART generates.  People using LAN-free cleints may need "tcpadmin 1510" for example.
  • Timezone setting: Moved from support tab to preferences tab
  • Ignore nodes: You can do this quickly from the list of nodes now; you no longer have to click on each node, ignore, then save.
  • _ART domain: Just so you know, ART creates a domain for itself on each TSM server.  This will be used by the next release.
  • Support forum: The Support tab now has a link to our support forum.  Feel free to post your problems there.

Release Notes: ART 1.1.2154, 01/02/2009

Minor changes:

  • MSIE 6 support:  IE6 now works on all pages.
  • Ignore at filespace level: You can tell ART to skip certain filespaces on a node, rather than skipping the entire node.
  • Handle long management class names: mgmtclass names longer than 10 chars made ART fail to test some files.
  • Timezone support: Support tab lets you set ART's timezone now.
  • Various cosmetic improvements.

Release Notes: ART 1.1.1949, 11/24/2008

Major changes:

  • ESX Version available: Customers using VMware ESX no longer need to convert our appliance to ESX format.  The download page has both available.
  • Backup Age: Node owners can log in to ART and see how long it's been since each node was backed up.  Handy for the engineer about to do scary system maintenance tasks.

Minor changes:

  • Easier TSM server setup. ART now ensures that the adminstrator has sufficient rights, and does other validations to ensure a painless setup.
  • Dashboard auto-refresh. The active sweep updates its progress in near-real-time; the "Refresh every 30/60/300 seconds" dropdown is gone.
  • More context for error messages.  Some messages, like "Backup too old", appeared without the list of filespaces and last-backup dates. Fixed.  This helps storage auditors get what they need from ART.
  • More help and best-practices info.  We dug through the various error messages we got from customer sites, and wrote up, in plain language, how to resolve them.  This will be an ongoing process, where we'll solicit the input of various TSM wizards.
  • More User Interface improvements.  Too many to name.  Good though.

Release Notes: ART 1.1.1854, 11/10/2008

Major changes:

  • Easier Setup: We automated the set up the dsmc password, and removed the "Test All Servers" button.  Now you can set up your TSM servers on the web page and start testing immediately.
  • Database Tuning:  We did things to make it faster and more reliable.

Minor Changes:

  • Displayed the VM's MAC address on the VMware console screen.  Some people need to know it in order to set up their DHCP server.  (Also, the FAQ page on our website explains how to set up static IP addresses.)
  • Lots of cosmetic improvements
  • Sweep rollover sometimes showed wrong dates to to caching; fixed that.
  • AIX nodes always showed filespaces as too old due to format of AIX queries; fixed that.

Release Notes: ART 1.1.1783, 10/27/2008

Major changes:

  • Find Missed Backups: ART now shows you nodes that have not been backed up for a long time.  There's no point in restore-testing a node that has not been backed up for three months.  This feature addresses a common and hugely important problem.
  • Exclude nodes: You can now exclude nodes from restore-testing.  Database nodes, for example, often have no backup files stored in TSM.  ART wrongly flags these as "Failed".  Now you can check an "Ignore" box, and add a comment explaining why, and ART will no longer report these nodes as failed, but as "Ignored".
  • Trial mode:  ART's license limits the number of nodes that can be tested.  If you are licensed for 500 nodes and try to test 600, ART will revert to Trial Mode, where it only tests one node out of ten.

Minor changes:

  • New Support Tab lets you
    • Upgrade ART to the latest version
    • Upgrade ART's license
    • View ART's CPU and disk-full statistics
    • Send logs to TSMworks support
  • Cosmetic improvements:
    • MSIE display is more reliable
    • Improved colors
    • VCR controls for controlling the current sweep
    • Miscellaneous prettification
  • Setup more reliable: Setup failed when TSM server demanded a minimum-length password.  ART now registers itself using an 8 character password.
  • New node names: ART registers itself on each TSM server as two nodes, "_art_linux" and "_art_windows".  If you ran an earlier version of ART, you may remove nodes named "art" and "art-wine".
  • Most Frequent Errors display more accurate. Rather than showing you a list of the 40 nodes that failed, ART shows you a list of the 5 reasons causing those 40 failures. Various inconsistencies were straightened out in that page.
